Fruit Power

Did you know that some of the fruits and vegetables you eat could also help you make electricity? Try this and see!

Tools and Materials

• 3 lemons (limes will do)
• 3 shiny copper coins. We used US pennies
• 3 zinc plated screws
• 4 wires, preferably with alligator clips on the ends.
• a small knife
• small paper sticky labels
• a light emitting diode (LED) with a low voltage rating. We used part 276-330 from Radio Shack.
• a plastic 35mm film canister or similar small container. Use an opaque one, preferable black, not one made of clear plastic.
• a nail or small awl

The zinc-plated screws can be found at most hardware stores. They are also called “galvanized” screws. The zinc plating, which is there to prevent rusting of the steel screw, gives them a shiny look. The wires with clips can be found at hardware stores or at electronics suppliers.

What To Do

First, roll all of the lemons, one at a time. Press down with your hand and roll until you feel the lemon become sort of “squishy.” The purpose of this is to release the juice inside the lemon. This step is very important; it helps you get the maximum response from your lemons.

Push and then twist a zinc-plated screw into one of the lemons about 1/3 of the way from one end. With the knife, carefully cut a 1 cm (3/4 in) slit into the lemon about 1/3 of the way from the other end.

CAUTION: It might be better for an adult to handle the knife. In all cases, please work with the knife SLOWLY and CAREFULLY.

Insert a copper coin into the slit so that about half of the coin is inside the lemon.

Note: Make sure you use a shiny new coin for this. If it is old and dull, polish it with steel wool.

Believe it or not, you can now get electricity from the lemon!! It behaves like an electric cell, with the coin as the positive (+) terminal and the screw as the negative (-) terminal. Unfortunately, it is a very weak cell. But if you have a couple more, you can join them to make a lemon battery.

Add coins and screws to the other two lemons the same way you did with the first. Then, with the wires and clips, join the three lemon cells together, so that the screw of the first lemon is connected to the coin of the second lemon, and so on. Add wires and clips to the first coin and the last screw also.

Finally, label the clip from the first coin with a “+” and the clip from the last screw with a “- “. Like a real battery, your lemon battery has a positive (+) terminal and a negative (-) terminal.

When connected like this in what is called a series connection, the lemons work together to create about the same voltage, or electrical force, as a couple of small flashlight batteries, somewhere between 2.5 and 3 volts. But this lemon battery does not create enough electrical current to light a flashlight bulb.

How can we tell if we really have created a battery? One way is to connect it to an electronic device that needs no more than about 2.5 to 3 volts but that does not require much electrical current. One such device called a light emitting diode, or LED for short. A low voltage and small current can cause an LED to light up.

The specifications on our LED package are: 5mm Red LED, 1.8 volt, 20mA. This means the diameter of the LED is 5 mm, and that it requires 1.8 volts and 20 milliamps of current to light up. Actually, the LED will light up dimly with less than 20 milliamps. Our lemon battery has enough volts but not nearly enough milliamps. So we will have to find a way to see its dim light. We tried enclosing it in a film canister to shield it from outside light.

With the nail, CAREFULLY punch two holes in the sides of the film canister, about halfway down. You might want to get an adult to do this for you.

Next, mark one hole with a “+” label and the other with a “-“ label.

Bend the wires of the LED into smooth outward curves. Then observe the LED closely. It is mostly round. However, if you tilt it in a certain way, you will be able to see a flat surface near one of the wires. The wire nearest this flat surface is the negative terminal. In the photograph, the wire on the left is the negative terminal of the LED. Can you see the small flat surface by the leftmost wire?

Line up the negative terminal wire of the LED with the “-“ labeled hole in the film canister. Insert the LED into the canister. Thread the negative terminal wire of the LED through the “-“ labeled hole, and the other (positive terminal) wire through the “+” labeled hole.

Pull the wires through the holes and secure them in place with the labels. Add labels to the top of the canister as well. Make sure that the LED is facing up.

Let’s get everything prepared for the big moment. Line up the “+” side of the LED canister with the “+” clip of your lemon battery. Bring the “-“ clip of your lemon battery close to the “-“ side of the canister.

Now we are ready! Connect the positive terminal of the LED to the positive terminal of your lemon battery. Connect the negative terminal of the LED to the negative terminal of your battery. The LED lights up!!

The LED is very dim, due to the small electrical current from your battery. The dark canister helps you to see this dim light. The end of the LED acts like a magnifying glass. When you look directly into the end of the LED, you can see the light easily.

This proves that you really have made a lemon battery that works!!

Congratulations!!

If you can’t see the LED light up try these fixes:

1. You may have the polarity of the LED reversed, that is, the + and - switched. Reverse the LED and see if it lights up.
2. The LED may be very dim. Dry it in a darker room and let you eyes adjust to the dimmer light before testing.
3. Make sure all of the connections are secure: wires clipped to the coins and screws and coins and screws firmly in the lemons.

More Things To Try

• Over time, the voltage in your lemon battery will go down. See how long your lemon battery will last. After a while, you might notice a darkening of a lemon near the screw. If you remove the screw and insert it (or a new zinc-plated screw) at another place in the lemon, you can partially restore the strength of your battery. You can also “juice up” your battery a little bit by moving the pennies in and out of their slots from time to time.

• Try more than three lemons connected together. Is the LED light brighter? Does the lemon battery last longer?
• Try larger pieces of copper and zinc.
• Try using an incandescent bulb - the kind used in a flashlight. Can you make a fruit battery strong enough to light it?
• Try other fruits and vegetables, such as potatoes and tomatoes. What about grapefruit and oranges? Can you think of a way to try bottled lemon juice?

• Obtain an electronic instrument called a multimeter. This device allows you to measure voltage directly. What is the voltage of your lemon battery? What is the voltage from a single lemon cell?
• Now think BIG with the idea of the lemon battery: Build this supersized cell .

Daily Bread: OPENED AND CLOSED DOORS

May 31st, 2007 by nahdiyazaheer

We need to learn to thank the Lord for closed doors just as much as we do for open doors. The reason God closes doors is because He has not prepared anything over there for us.

If He didn’t close the wrong door we would never find our way to the right door.

Even when we don’t realize it, God directs our paths through the closing and opening of doors. When one door closes, it forces us to change our course. Another door closes; it forces us to change our course yet again.

Then finally, we find the open door and walk right into our blessing.

But instead of praising God for the closed door (which kept us out of wasting time), we get upset because we "judge by the appearances." And in our own arrogance, or ignorance, we insist that we know what is right.

We have a very present help in the time of need who is always standing guard. Because He walks ahead of us, He can see trouble down the road and HE sets up road blocks and detours accordingly. But through our lack of wisdom we try to tear down the roadblocks or push aside the detour signs. Then the minute we get into trouble, we start crying "Lord how could this happen to me?"

We have got to realize that the closed door was a blessing. Didn’t He say that "No good thing will He withhold from them that love Him?"

If you get terminated from your job - don’t be down, instead thank God for the new opportunities that will manifest themselves - it might be a better job, or an opportunity to go to school. If that man or woman won’t return your call - it might not be them, it might be the Lord setting up a roadblock (just let it go).

One time a person had a bank he had been doing business with for many years tell him "NO" for a $10,000 loan. The Lord led him to call another bank.  That bank approved a $40,000 loan for him at a lower interest rate than his own bank had advertised.

I’m so grateful, for the many times God has closed doors to me, just to open them in the most unexpected places. "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way." (Psalms 37:23) The Mountain top is glorious, but it is in the Valley that I will grow!

Always Remember God gives you…

Enough Happiness to keep you Sweet

Enough Trials to keep you Strong

Enough Sorrows to keep you Human

Enough Hope to keep you Happy

Enough Failure to keep you Humble

Enough Success to keep you

Eager Enough Friends to give you Comfort

Enough Wealth to meet your Needs

Enough Enthusiasm to make you look forward

Enough Faith to banish depression

and Enough Determination to make each day a better day than the last.

Life must be lived forward but can only be understood backwards.

"Commit to the Lord in whatever you do and your plans will succeed." (Proverbs 16:3)

Riyo Mori of Japan Crowned Miss Universe

May 29th, 2007 by nahdiyazaheer

Miss USA, Jeered by Crowd, Takes Fifth Place

By JULIE WATSON
AP
MEXICO CITY (May 29) - A 20-year-old dancer from Japan was crowned Miss Universe 2007 on Monday night, marking only the second time her country has won the world beauty title.
Dressed in a black, red and purple Japanese-style gown, Riyo Mori nervously grabbed the hands of first runner-up, Natalia Guimaraes of Brazil, just before the winner was announced. Then she threw her hands up and covered her mouth, overcome with emotion.
But she gathered herself together enough to catch the diamond-and-pearl-studded headpiece valued at $250,000 as it slipped off her head when Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico crowned her. Mori immediately placed it back on her head.
The last time Japan won the pageant was in 1959 when Akiko Kojima became the first Miss Universe from Asia.
"She is an amazing champion, an amazing woman and I hear that they go totally insane in Japan, so that’s good," said Donald Trump , who co-owns the pageant with NBC.
Miss USA Rachel Smith, who slipped and fell to the floor during the evening gown competition and was jeered by the Mexican audience during the interview phase, was the contest’s fourth runner-up.
Mori, from the small town of Shizuoka at the base of Mount Fuji, won the cheers of the Mexico City audience when she opened her interview, saying ‘Hola, Mexico!’
"I learned how to always be happy, be patient and to be positive, and this is what I want to teach to the next generation," she said during the interview competition.
The daughter of a dance school operator, Mori said her grandmother told her as a child that she wanted her to be Miss Japan before she turned 20.
"From the very beginning, I entered the competition with high hopes and an unswerving determination to make this dream a reality," she said in a pre-competition interview.
She wants to someday open an international dance school in Tokyo.
"Right now I am only 20 years old, so I’m really excited about what I’m going to be able to do at this age to benefit society," Mori said after winning.
Smith was booed during her interview and several audience members chanted "Mexico! Mexico!" until she spoke in Spanish, saying "Buenas noches Mexico. Muchas gracias!" which earned her applause. Mexico has a fierce rivalry with its northern neighbor.
Also finishing in the top five were second runner-up Ly Jonaitis of Venezuela and third runner-up Honey Lee of Korea.
The winner travels the world for a year on behalf of charities and pageant sponsors.
The 15 finalists from a field of 77 contestants were announced early in Monday’s show. They were picked last week during preliminary judging in the contest’s swimsuit, evening gown and interview categories. Their names were not announced until Monday, allowing all 77 to be introduced to the television audience.
As soon as the final 15 had been selected, they immediately strutted across the stage in animal-print bikinis for the swimsuit competition. After the evening gown competition, five contestants were eliminated, and the judges chose the winner from the five remaining.
Missing from this year’s contest was Miss Sweden, whose country is one of the few to win the crown three times. Isabel Lestapier Winqvist, 20, dropped out because many Swedes say the competition does not represent the modern woman.
Hours before the pageant began, dozens of protesters held a mock ceremony in downtown Mexico City that featured "Miss Marijuana," "Miss Sexual Health," "Miss Human Rights" and other candidates with obscenities written across their sashes. The group yelled "Neither ugly nor beautiful, should a woman be considered an object!"
Pageant organizers say the Miss Universe contest carefully selects women who are intelligent, well-mannered and cultured.
1999 Miss Teen USA Vanessa Minnillo and "Extra" weekend correspondent Mario Lopez hosted the live, two-hour telecast, broadcast on NBC and Telemundo, expected to be viewed by more than 600 million people in more than 180 countries.
The celebrity judges included actor James Kyson Lee, model Lindsay Clubine, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, rocker Dave Navarro, Olympic figure skating champion Michelle Kwan, celebrity hairstylist Ken Paves, fashion designer Marc Bouwer, "Project Runway" judge and Elle magazine fashion director Nina Garcia and former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres.
The pageant was last held in Mexico City in 1993, when Torres was crowned.

What LOVE means to me

May 27th, 2007 by nahdiyazaheer

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking. It is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
Bible ~I Corinthians 13:4-8~

What is love?  This is commonly asked in a slum book.  Others say it makes the world go round and it’s a many splendored thing.

According to some love experts, love is a feeling to be learned.  It is a tension and an achievement.  It’s a strong desire and a dislike.  It is happiness and also suffering.  All of these opposites are partners when defining what love is.  Happiness is only a part of love and lovers understand it very well, but pain and suffering is also a part of love.  This is the mystery of love and it is a feeling to be earned and learned.

There are different kinds of love that we could convey, like divine love which is our love to God, erotic love which is a love between a man and a woman and paternal love which is a love for our parents.  Whatever kind of Love it is, love is very fragile and it had to be handle with care.
Others say that through love all that is bitter will sweet, all that is copper will be gold, all remains will turn to purest wine, all pain will turn to medicine, the dead will become alive, and the king will turn into a slave.  That’s how powerful love is.  Loving another person is not separate from loving God.  One is a single wave, the other is the ocean.  Love never forces.  Love is intelligent and brings only what you need.  The awakening of true love lies in finding peace within passion and passion within peace.  Love doesn’t need reason.  It speaks from the irrational wisdom of the heart.  A heart that has learned to trust can be at rest in the world.  Love is attention without judgment.  In its natural state, attention only appreciates.  Love is the beginning of the journey, its end and journey itself.  Love is like water.  If it doesn’t flow, it stagnates.  The mind judges what is good or bad.  Love brings only good.  True love is here and now.  Whatever you can remember or anticipate is only a shadow of love.

Perfect love is rare indeed, for to be a lover will require that you continually have the subtlety of the very wise, the flexibility of the child, and the sensitivity of the artist, the understanding of the philosopher, the acceptance of the saint, the tolerance of the scholar and the fortitude of the certain.

I may describe love as it cannot endure indifference. It needs to be wanted. Like a lamp, it needs to be fed out of the oil of another’s heart, or its flame burns low. Love is not composed of feelings and emotions for it is what you believed deep inside your heart. Whatever happens, GOD would make it last forever.]

The greatest of all virtue is love.  Love is patient. Love is kind.  It is not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking.  It is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.  And as what I Corinthians 13:4-8 says, LOVE NEVER FAILS

What FRIENDSHIP means to me.

May 10th, 2007 by nahdiyazaheer

The most powerful relationship that you can enter into, outside of your own family, is friendship.

Friends are someone who comes right in, when things don’t come out right.  When none of my dreams come true, they will.  They never look for my money except when I’ve lost it.  They never get in my way except to clear it for me.  Nothing is more important to them than making me important.  They are in my corner when I’m cornered.  They turn up when I get turned down.  All they want in return for their helping hands is my handshake.  They rap my critics when they’re wrong and take the rap for me when they’re right. You can do anything you want to with their friendship except buy it or sell it.  They make you realize that having real friends are like having an extra life.

There’s a poem saying a friend in need is a friend indeed.  On this cliché we agree.  Aiding the friend less fortunate.  Is a virtue, obviously.  But there is a rarer kind of a friend.  From my own point of view; The friend who with sincerity, rejoices, feel happy for me.  When I attain success denied her.  By fate; likewise fame and wealth, or through himself grown sickly, is glad that I’m in good health.  A friend who, as I rose higher, I left farther and farther behind, and lost track of, so that note she is hardly in my mind.  Yet despite the diverse luck.  The gap grown between us two, rather than feeling bitter, this friend takes real pride in me.  The greater friend is the friend who is not at all envious.

A friend knows there is another human being you can trust completely; realizing that someone else wants the best for you, too; providing a gentle haven where the other can be relaxed and feel safe; helping solve problems without taking over your friend’s life; sharing the grief times along with the great times; being together without needing to pretend; forgiving pretenses when they do occur; cherishing together the joys and traumas of change and growth; nourishing one another’s dream, hopes, and decisions along the path; encouraging a friend to stretch as far as possible; receiving feedback without questioning motive; easing pain instead of fueling the fire of hurt; loving another person in spite of differences and imperfections.

Accepting a friend’s anger toward me, mine is also sanctioned.  We send love even when we’re not together or in agreement; we come to a friend’s aid and expecting nothing in return; we free each other from the manipulations that undo many relationships; we dance through life together, not trudge along toward death and we soar to new heights rather than plunge into mark and mine; we find time to be together despite the obstacles of everyday living; we want no more than to be with each other at that moment; we understand the occasional need for distance; we take up right where you left off, even after several years; we know that our commitment to each other is always by choice; and we give freely when appropriate and take graciously when needed.

Friendship is not instantaneous, they are earned.  Friendship withstands the storms and upheavals of time.  Friendship surpasses the worn boundaries of acquaintanceship. Friendship often develops with unlikely people at unlikely times.  Friendship knows the difference between image and substance.  Friends stretch out in the glow of the other’s triumph.  Friends will be there when you need them.  FRIENDS ARE ONE OF GOD’S GREATEST GIFTS.
